Lovelyz is a Kpop group created by Woollim Ent., located within Seoul, South Korea. The group consists of 8 singers: Kei, Seo Ji-soo, Yoo, Ju-ae, Lee Mi-joo, Baby Soul, JIN, Jung Yein, and Ryu Su-jeong. Their debut was November 12th, 2014.

Today, I am “reverse engineering” a picture for the understanding of how a picture can appeal to so many people. Colors, Contrasts, Repetition, Alignments, and Proximity are all key components in creating the perfect design/ picture. Here, I will explain how each of those components are used within this picture.

Contrast:

Contrast is a key point in the group’s images. Each girl has dyed/changed their hair in a certain way to distinguish each other from one other for their fans. Each one has their own personality which shows in their design choices. Contrast is important because it can show the difference between people. Whether it is on a picture or on stage, due to the contrast between each other, they are easily spotted and found anywhere and anytime with ease. Through contrast, the designs can be spotted with precision and accuracy.

Repetition:

The edges of this picture is a perfect example of Repetition in a picture. Despite them being in different angles, the design, edges, size, and arrangement on the picture are perfectly in sync with each other. Through repetition in this case, it doesn’t hurt our eyes. If there was a difference between the outsides, our focus wouldn’t be on the main point of this picture: The K-Pop group. Our eyes would be focused on everything else. Because of this, the editors decided to make a simplistic design for the corners so we would turn our attention to the main point of this picture.

Alignment:

Alignment is very important when it comes to design and making something look professional. For this picture, they decided to put everything down the middle. As you can see from the blue line, they put the words in a middle alignment, the perfect alignment for this picture. Putting the words in a hard left or hard right alignment would take away from the picture. Putting the words directly under the K-pop group was the best call.

Proximity:

For proximity, I decided to call out 2 different situations that they used. The first one is inside the picture with the K-pop group. They put them so close together that they seem as one. The girls share a friendship and closeness, and it shows. Despite their scowling faces, the closeness of the group is surely showing. They are a group, not a bunch of soloists. The 2nd one is going back to the words. They are all grouped together because they go with each other. If “Obliviate” and “Lovelyz M07 [Unforgettable]” were separated, it would seem like they are 2 different things they are trying to portray. Instead, they are grouping them together, due to [Unforgettable] being the album name, and “Obliviate” being the lead song for said album. Through this, we can see that they are a 2-in-1 package. Without the other, they wouldn’t be complete. They complement each other.

Color:

The colors complement each other and coexist with each other beautifully. It gives it a plain and a “not over the top look”. The top 4 colors that were used are listed on the picture. Then with the picture as well, tints and shades are also present of the colors; some brighter and some darker. They blend perfectly together and create an image that isn’t flashy and intense for the viewers. It is a formal, relaxing to the eyes, and peaceful picture.

Conclusion:

The design of the picture is splendid and proves that each type of design during their work. Not one was left out. The design, although subtle and quiet, had so much intricacy to it. From the contrast of their hair to the repetition of certain pieces on the picture, it shows potential and professionalism. Needless to say, it succeeded. It had caught my eye and the hundreds of thousands who are fan of Lovelyz. It developed a powerful look to it: sleek. I truly enjoyed being able to reverse engineer this picture. It has given me a lot to think about.
